Step 1: Load your Photo
Begin by opening your image in Photoshop and create a new layer named “Spot Healing Brush Edit” to ensure the preservation of your original image. This extra layer acts as a safety net for your edits. Zoom in on specific areas that need attention, such as the crumbs on the taco display.
Step 2: Spot Healing Brush Tool
Navigate to the Tools panel and select the Spot Healing Brush. In the Options bar, set the Mode to Normal, Type to Content-Aware, and check the Sample All Layers box to enable edits on the new layer to affect the photo layer.
The size of the brush tip should be just a bit bigger than the object. Adjust the brush y clicking the brush options dropdown menu in the Options bar. In this example, we used a brush size of 100, a Hardness of 100%, and Spacing of 1%.
Pro TIP:ย You can use the left bracket ([) to quickly shrink the brush size, and the right bracket (]) to enlarge it.
Step 3: For smaller objects: Click and Remove
Hover your brush over smaller objects like the crumbs, and just “click”! They should disappear and be blended in with the yellow background. The Content-Aware feature will seamlessly remove unwanted elements. Ensure your brush covers any shadows, and fine-tune your edits until your desired outcome.
Pro TIP: The Eraser tool can be used to refine Spot Healing Brush strokes.
Step 4: For larger objects: Click, Drag, Remove
Extend the same technique to larger objects like cheese and lettuce. Click and drag the brush across these areas, watching them effortlessly blend into the background. If edges appear too obvious, undo your edit (Command + Z) and adjust the brush hardness for a smoother finish.
